Easy Steps to Keep Your Printer Running Smoothly

Your Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-1000 printer is a precision instrument that is designed to provide consistent, high quality prints for years. Like your car, your camera, and many other pieces of equipment in your life, your printer will work best when it is used and maintained regularly. This article will describe easy steps that will keep your printer delivering high-quality results print after print.

Ink Nozzle Maintenance

If you see that your prints are becoming blurry, smeary, or uneven, it may be time to perform maintenance in your print nozzles. Start by running a test print, either from the Canon Inkjet Printer Utility, or from the front panel of your printer.

• Test Print and Cleaning

On a Mac ®, Launch the Canon Inkjet Printer Utility by going to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners > Options & Supplies > Utility. Select Open Printer Utility to access the maintenance tools. Pull down on the menu and select Test Print. The Nozzle Check will then print. If you see gaps or smears in the nozzle check pattern, pull down on the menu and select Cleaning. Click on the icon simply entitled Cleaning, and select which group of nozzles to clean, or clean all nozzles, based on your evaluation of the Nozzle Check pattern. When the cleaning is complete, run another nozzle check to confirm that all clogs have been cleared.

• Deep Cleaning

If your nozzle check still is not clear after a couple of cleanings, it may be time for a deep cleaning. Deep cleaning will force much more ink through the print head to remove stubborn clogs. As with the normal cleaning, run a nozzle check after your cleaning is complete to confirm that the print heads are now clear.

• System Cleaning

If your print heads still are not clear after a deep cleaning, a System Cleaning will use more ink to try to remove the clogs. Only use this setting after all other attempts at cleaning have failed.

Print Head Alignment

Print head alignment should be performed after the following scenarios.

• When the printer is first installed
• After the printer has been moved
• If the print head strikes your paper

For truly optimum results, you may choose to perform a print head alignment when switching to or from a very thick paper, such as art papers. When you are using thick paper, the ink has a shorter distance to travel to reach the paper, and this can result in small differences in the ink droplet’s placement from the moving print carriage.

Before you start your print head alignment, make sure that you run a nozzle check, and a print head cleaning if the nozzle check indicates that it is necessary. You will also need three sheets of your paper in A4 or letter size.

• From the Maintenance menu on the front panel of the printer, select Print head alignment then select the Auto option. Select your paper size and type. The automated print head alignment will be complete in about 12 minutes.

• If you are not completely satisfied with your results after the automated print head alignment, perform a Manual print head alignment to fine tune your alignment. The printer will generate a series of patterns for your review. For best results, use a well-lit area and a loupe to help you evaluate the print patterns and find the best alignment.

Clean Everything!!

• Cleaning the Paper Feed Roller

Over time, fibers from your papers will build up on the paper feed roller and may cause your paper to jam or slip when you are printing. For the best possible results, clean your paper feed roller when you see a visible buildup on the roller or when you notice that the paper is jamming unexpectedly. Cleaning will cause some wear on the roller, so be careful to clean only when needed.

To perform a roller cleaning, go to the Maintenance menu on the front panel of your printer and choose Roller cleaning. Choose which paper source to clean and load paper accordingly. The rear tray will require 3 sheets of plain paper, and the manual feed tray will require 1 sheet of plain paper. The cleaning will be complete when all of the paper has been ejected.

If the automatic paper feed roller cleaning does not resolve your issue, unplug the printer and wipe the paper feed roller parts carefully with a moistened cotton swab. Be careful to avoid touching the paper feed roller with your fingers, but you can manually turn the shaft to clean it on all sides. After you have completed the manual cleaning, plug the printer back in and perform the automatic paper feed roller cleaning again to complete the cleaning process.

• Bottom Plate Cleaning

Over time, ink will spray onto the bottom plate of the printer, especially if you perform borderless printing. Cleaning the bottom plate of the printer removes this excess ink before it transfers onto your paper.

To clean the bottom plate, go to the Maintenance menu, and select Bottom plate cleaning. Fold a single sheet of A3 or letter-size paper in half lengthwise, unfold it, and then load this sheet of paper into the rear tray with the long side feeding first and the open side facing towards you. If you see smudges of ink on your paper, repeat the bottom plate cleaning process. Finish by unplugging the printer and wiping the bottom place surface with a moistened cotton swab to remove any residual ink on the surface of the paper.

By following these simple maintenance steps, you can make sure that your Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-1000 will deliver consistent, error-free prints throughout its lifespan.
