Canon’s new EOS C700 flagship cinema camera represents the culmination of image engineering and product design you might expect from five years of Canon’s digital cinema development, and represented by the current Cinema EOS line of cameras.
Building off the industry recognized strengths of the Cinema EOS system, adding innovative features, and incorporating a sleek, distinct ergonomic design, Canon has delivered an advanced cinema camera professionals can count on for all their production needs. The EOS C700’s new modular design and highly expandable body lets users combine Canon’s wide-ranging lineup of original camera and support accessories with third-party accessories to build a system flexible enough to handle any shooting application or location. Furthermore, the expanded recording options of the C700 are optimized especially for today’s demanding 4K productions and workflows.
The EOS C700 is the first Canon camera to use the Apple® ProRes intermediate codec, and features both 4K internal ProRes and XF-AVC recording. With these recording options the EOS C700 Super35 format camera is designated to become a flexible “A” camera for most any production requirement. Its recording capabilities are especially tailored to meet the demanding needs of feature films, commercials, documentaries and episodic television productions by offering the workflow choices the industry requires.
The C700 includes a wide range of 2K/HD recording options, with internal recording frame rates up to 120 fps using the full frame of the sensor, and expanded slow motion capabilities up to 240 fps in 2K crop mode.
The Canon C700 is capable of recording uncompressed RAW up to 120 frames per second with the optional 4K Codex CDX-36150 recorder.
C700 RAW files are recorded in an uncompressed .RMF format with no “baked-in” settings applied. Clip development can then be easily adjusted in post using Canon’s Cinema RAW Development software.
The Codex CDX-36150 attaches securely to the rear of the camera body, and is operated using the C700’s menus and controls, making this Codex model significantly smaller and lighter than most externally mounted RAW recorders.
While using the Codex CDX-36150, the C700 can record uncompressed 10-bit or 12-bit 4K RAW up to 120 fps, 2K RAW to 240 fps, or 4K ProRes up to 60 fps.
The EOS C700 models offer a choice from two new Super 35mm CMOS sensors. The C700 is available in both EF (Cinema Lock style) and PL mount versions, and features a pixel resolution of 4622 X 2496 (approx. 11.54MP), a dynamic range of 15 stops, and brings Dual Pixel CMOS AF to the top-of-the line EF model. The PL only C700 PL GS features 14 stops of dynamic range, a Global Shutter and a pixel resolution of 4374 X 2496 (approx. 10.92MP). With three models to choose from, users can select the right C700 model to meet their shooting requirements.
The C700 has two modes of internal recording: Canon XF-AVC and Apple ProRes. Both record to internal CFast Media.
XF-AVC records up to 59.94p in 4K onto the CFast media, and 4K ProRes 422HQ to 29.97p. Simultaneous dual CFast recording is available for immediate backup.
In addition to Canon’s exclusive XF-AVC, the EOS C700 offers standard support for the highly versatile Apple ProRes format. This enables XF-AVC or ProRes + RAW and low-rate proxy data simultaneous recording to meet backup application and smooth data management needs.
The redesigned EOS C700 is a full size cinema camera allowing for both traditional studio style and handheld configurations.
The rugged magnesium body features rounded edges and semi-circular sides behind the lens mount that hint at the Canon Cinema EOS design legacy.
Taking advantage of the EF and PL lens mounts, the multipurpose design allows the EOS C700 to be used with a wide variety of lenses, and includes a B4 option (shown above with an optional Canon B4 adapter), and a Cinema EOS first – anamorphic lens support.
The Canon EOS C700 supports anamorphic format lenses. The image in the viewfinder and on connected monitors is automatically ‘desqueezed’ for corrected viewing. It is possible to use the camera’s full 4K resolution with 1.3x squeeze anamorphic lenses that cover the full 16x9 area of the C700 sensor, while 2x squeeze anamorphic lenses cover a 1.2:1 aspect ratio and use a proportionally cropped area of the sensor.
The EOS C700 with PL mount is fitted with /i contacts. The metadata recorded includes depth-of-field, lens, focal length, distance and aperture. /i Technology is extremely helpful in VFX work for matching moves and determining lens parameters.
The power source for B4 lenses is provided through the main body’s 12-pin lens connector, enabling mechanical zoom and other functions.
The EOS C700 will be comfortable operating in any shooting environment, and offers an assortment of new accessory options, including a handheld, shoulder support unit and shoulder-style grip unit.
The grip unit offers the operability of a shoulder-mount camera when combined with the shoulder support unit. It offers a 12-pin lens connector to enable power supply from the main body, and allows for simple camera and lens controls including REC start/stop, zoom, and iris/aperture.
The top of the camera body features a built-in cheese plate design with numerous 1/4-20 and 3/8" attachment points, and a newly designed handle unit.
The EOS C700 system offers an optional 0.7-inch OLED electronic viewfinder (EVF-V70). Canon’s first professional grade viewfinder features Full HD 1920x1080 viewing, illuminated buttons, surround view, view assist and false color. The EVF also has the ability to display a simulated HDR image with a “stretched” dynamic range for increased shadow detail and highlight retention.
The optional remote operation unit (OU-700) enables wired remote operation for assistants in charge of camera settings or triggering. This unit can also be mounted onto the right side of the main body.
Other key features of the camera system are the inclusions of Canon Log 2 and Canon Log 3, ACES Support, SMPTE 2084 HDR Monitoring, 10 stops of internal ND filtration, and IP Streaming capabilities.
The EOS C700 EF and PL will begin shipping December 2016. The EOS C700 GS PL is currently expected to go on sale in January 2017.
