EVENT DESCRIPTION:

One of the most important photographs you could ever take in your life is a portrait. A portrait is a reminder to the world that your subject existed, showcase their triumphs, express their hardships and capture a moment in time that will not be forgotten. We will begin this class with a discussion about the structure and purpose of the portrait. Who is your audience and what is the story they should receive from your image? We’ll continue with exploring the technical details of camera settings, experimenting with the quality of light and most importantly, interacting with your subject. Above all, communicating effectively with your subject builds a strong rapport that opens the possibility of conveying the story you set out to tell with your camera.

What you will learn:

• Basic camera settings for portraits: initial suggestions, and possibilities

• Understanding depth-of-field, and how to get the effects you want

• The visual impact of different lenses

• The beauty of available light, and creating your own light

• Basic posing of your portrait subjects

• Interacting with portrait subjects: directing, communicating, and establishing trust

• Simple approach = productive results

What to bring:

• Your Canon EOS camera with memory card and lenses

• Fully charged battery

• One or two lenses
