Karen will share her story about photographing politics by and photographing the world of movies. From D.C. photojournalist to Hollywood Unit Stills Photographer, Karen will share her story about photographing high profile news makers to the world of motion pictures, presenting work from both disciplines and discussing her varied and interesting career.
Karen Ballard has been working in the movie industry since 2005 when Steven Spielberg hired her for his epic film “Munich.” Since her first film, she has worked on a variety of productions as the main unit photographer including “Patriots Day”, “Jack Reacher”, “Quantum of Solace” to name a few. Also, as an accomplished photojournalist, she has covered major news stories at The White House, on Capitol Hill, and the Middle East. Her photos have run worldwide in major news publications with stories ranging from Tommy Franks landing in Baghdad to Saddam Hussein on his arraignment day. Karen has won numerous awards for her work and has traveled extensively on assignment to Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Indonesia, Europe, and South America aside from her work in the United States. In January 2009, Karen was one of the principal photographers for Barack Obama: The Official Inaugural Book and took the historic picture of Obama being sworn in for The White House. After making Washington, DC her base for over 16 years, Karen now resides in Venice, CA and has been shooting a personal project for the last several years about the famous beach town she now calls home.
